More than the Bottom Line: Business Education to Change the World

Point Loma Nazarene University had had a department of Accountancy, Business and Economics for many years. But a generous donor gifted the university with funds to build a multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art facility which became the Fermanian School of Business. To brand the new school, we worked with the faculty to develop themes designed to differentiate PLNU’s program from other Schools of Business in San Diego. This copy appeared in a brochure for targeted distribution at the Professionals in the Making Business Breakfast in downtown San Diego, attended by 600. The content was also adapted for a media presentation used at the breakfast, on the web site and at the dedication of the new School.

More than the Bottom Line: Business Education to Change the World

Ethics in business is a popular topic these days. But the Fermanian School of Business at Point Loma Nazarene University puts into practice what many others merely talk about. Anchored by PLNU’s commitment to Christ, the Fermanian School of Business continues the university’s tradition of academic excellence, integrated values and active engagement in the world.

In addition, its newly completed state-of-the-art facilities reflect Point Loma’s dedication to excellence on behalf of its students, as well as to its community. The Fermanian School of Business is about more than the bottom line. It’s about business education to change the world.

Academic Excellence

The Latest Theory; The Best Practice

Excellence in Teaching—Every member of the faculty is deeply committed to excellence. Leading the way is Bruce Schooling, dean of the Fermanian School of Business, who was chosen in 2003 by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs as its best business teacher, an international award.

Excellence in Scholarship—Both undergraduate and graduate programs integrate forward thinking business theory with cutting-edge technology to give students a well-rounded academic experience.

Excellence as a Standard—Students are expected to strive for the highest academic achievement possible. The bar is high, but PLNU wants students to succeed beyond their dreams and change the world.

Integrated Values

What What We Say We Believe Equals What We Do

Aligning Values with Action—The Fermanian School of Business believes integrity is more than a buzzword; it’s a way of life. To be a fully integrated individual and a professional is to assimilate a set of values and behave out of them—all day, everyday; when the world is watching and especially when it isn’t.

Building upon Character—Good business is done by good business people, whose character has been shaped in the consistent real-world practice of integrity.

Intentional Community—The Fermanian School of Business believes the best education, modeled by faculty and staff, prepares a person to live a full and balanced life. We endeavor to educate the “whole” person, the heart, mind and spirit, in the context of vital Christianity.

Active Engagement

Around the Region and Around the World

Outside the Classroom—The Fermanian School of Business, through the Fermanian Business Center, builds partnerships with regional business leaders through workshops, faculty consulting and student projects to put theory into practice.

Global Perspective—The Fermanian School of Business integrates a global perspective into its curriculum and provides practical application through the Armenian Center for International Development.

Service as an Expression of Faith—“More than the bottom line” means a great business education, based on Christian values, that encourages students to live lives of service to their communities, their regions and the world.

Point Loma Nazarene University

Point Loma Nazarene University is an undergraduate and graduate liberal arts institution sponsored by the Church of the Nazarene. It was founded in 1902 in Los Angeles, and after serving students for decades as Pasadena College, the institution moved in 1973 to its beautiful campus in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego.
