Why should I hire an editor or writer?
The short answer is this: if you want a professional looking project, you need a professional to help you achieve it. Put your time into what you are best gifted to do, and hire The Strong Word for the rest.
Are there different kinds of editing? And what's the difference between editing and proofreading?
Yes, there are levels of editorial work. You may be needing a macro editor, a developmental editor, a substantive editor, a manuscript editor, a line editor, a copyeditor, a production editor, a rewriter, a ghostwriter, a desktop publisher, or a proofreader. Or maybe you don’t know what sort of editor you’re looking for! All these terms cover different combinations of editorial skills and tasks—and we can help you identify just which you need.
And yes, editing and proofreading are not the same thing. In general, editing is done before typesetting, and proofreading is done after the material has been designed or typeset. Changes in the proofreading stage must be kept to a minimum.
What sort of writing do you do?
The Strong Word has written long and short newspaper articles, magazine stories, Web copy, annual reports, group leader’s manuals, study guides, news releases, information sheets, speeches, and memoirs. We especially enjoying writing profiles of people.
You don’t spell out your rates. Why not?
We're not hiding anything. Every job requires a different combination of skill, time and effort, making it impossible to broadcast hard and fast fees.
What do you mean by “manuscript page” (sometimes referred to as an ms page)?
This is a measure used mostly in reference to book manuscripts, and it typically means 250 words.
What if I’m in a hurry? Can you do a rush job?
Yes, but it will add 20 percent to the bill. So try to plan ahead!
I prefer phone consultations; e-mail takes too much time. Can you accommodate that?
Everyone has his or her most comfortable style of communication. The Strong Word tries to keep clients' costs low; e-mail is a good way to do that. However, if you prefer to consult by phone, the first 15 minutes is free. Subsequent minutes are charged to the nearest quarter hour as needed.
Just how fast are you, anyway?
Quickness isn’t the only factor in good editing, but a decade of working on a daily metropolitan newspaper did hone my speed. It’s common for freelancers to handle five to ten ms pages per hour for basic (light to medium) copy editing. (See the Editorial Freelancers Association for more information.)
I’m working on sensitive material. Can you guarantee confidentiality?
All work is kept in the strictest confidence.
Is there anything you won’t work on?
The Strong Word does not do desktop publishing, indexing, or transcribing.
Also, we prefer not to work on nonfiction or fiction categorized as New Age, Pagan or neo-Pagan, occultic, or excessively dark. We are not a good candidate for politically Progressive material, or vitriolic screeds of any persuasion. And, our knowledge of science and technology is pretty thin.
How come I’ve never heard of you?
Editors by definition work behind the scenes. In addition, my writing is not the sort to reach a national stage. That’s just the reality of it.
